A RED FACE

Never could make IMAP work until a few days ago when I found some simple instructions and decided to try. OH BOY--did it ever work. I thought letters and attachments I had previously tried to send had been deleted. Wrong...A book, already published made its way to the same publisher who, no doubt, thinks I'm a ditz. I received an additional photo from a source who had already sent me four for a magazine article that will be published in September--great photo and I sent it on to the editor. I don't who the--should I call it spammed--recipients of the other nine emails are at this time. I hope they are forgiving souls.

I believe some wise man once said, "If you're going to make a mistake, make a big one."

Bests,

Elise

EDITORS

Editors I have loved--platonically--and lost leave a gap in my life and I imagine in the lives of my fellow writers. The world of magazines has changed along with paper and print. There are three editors I miss in particular. One edited for an on-line publication that sold property in Europe and Asia but used short pieces about travel destinations, restaurants and museums within those countries. Once an article that I wrote was accepted, I wrote a good deal about travel for them. They also had several print publications that paid larger fees and several of my longer pieces appeared in those. I enjoyed working with the two editors as they published the types of pieces I enjoyed writing and they clearly defined the publication's needs.

After a few years the publication was sold and one editor left for a technical magazine--I don't know what became of the other but I wish them both exciting and fulfilling futures.

The third editor worked on a historical e-magazine and I don't know why but the articles I wrote never reached her desk until--one day--my contact went on vacation and the editor found the first piece I had written. It was published and led to two more and a third requested. Unfortunately--the magazine went under.

I guess I've been fortunate in finding editors that are so good at what they do that I not only miss writing for their publications but I miss both their corrections, humor and dedication.

Do you miss special editors and publications?

Bests,

Elise

The Library

Hadn't been to our local library in awhile. Busy writing a new novel, articles and stories and when I have the time to relax buying and reading a new eBook. When I walked past the library yesterday, I was shocked when I read that it is now closed on Sundays and offers fewer hours on Thursdays. Remembering my childhood, all I could think of were today's children who have parents who are unemployed, underemployed or just can't afford all the books necessary to learn.

The books I borrowed from the library made a great difference in my life allowing me to study the way other people lived and introducing me to other countries. Reading Edna Ferber's Show Boat made me long for a career in the theatre and I tried and succeeded after reading every play and theatre biography on the shelves. Most of all, the books I read transported me to other worlds, a lifelong love of reading and a second career as a writer.

Did you, as a child, haunt libraries the way I did?

Elise

Coming in September

Received my check for an article to be published in Pennsylvania Magazine in September. Thoroughly enjoyed writing the article (it's about ice cream and Pennsylvania's history.) I enjoy the cold delight more than cakes, cookies or pie--even chocolate cream pie. Maybe that's why I had so much fun. Love to open the mail-box and find a check for something I've written waiting. Makes the day a sunny one despite the rain that is pouring down and the shopping cart that lost a wheel two blocks from home.

What is your favorite dessert and have y0u included it in any of your writings?

Bests,

Elise

TONY AWARDS

Spent last night glued to the television set. One of the best Tony Award programs I've seen. Neil Patrick Harris, the host, livened up the ceremonies with a slightly, politically incorrect opening number that would make a sphinx laugh. The voices of the leads and feaured players in the shows are terrific and dancers get better and better and better. There's suspense, glamour, tension and an outpouring of love for the theatre at the awards. Have to buy tickets for the shows I haven't seen yet. Temptation on the Great White Way beckons.

HEAT

After complaining about the cold all winter, New York is having an early heat wave. Finally changed my closet from heavy clothing to light. Rain pelted the city accompanied by lightining and thunder last night and the temperature dropped a few degrees. Today, I'll mange a walk although it's safer not to breath in too much of the humid air.

Worked on the novel all morning and will research this afternoon. Tonight I'll dream of Sorrento and walks along narrow, dirt paths leading from a small hotel to the town. Olive trees stare from behind a fence and I can hear chickens cackle at a rooster who proclaim's his authority. I'll think of the old town and the lunch of pasta with white clam sauce and the glass of white wine and the English tourists my husband and I met and conversed with. We discussed the state of the world--unable to solve its problems, we still felt better after we talked.

THE JUROR

Sat on the edge of my couch a few days ago while watching Alec Baldwin in a film from 1996 titled The Juror. When the motion picture began, I was stretched out, relaxed and eager to watch one of my favorite actors. After the first few minutes, I sat straight up--the suspense building as this good-looking hunk played by Baldwin turned out to be an extremely charming personification of evil. The motion picture, well cast, included Demi Moore whose work I'm ashamed to admit had escaped. I have some catching up to do.

I found Baldwin's character so complex--at one point I surprised myself hoping he would turn out to be a good guy. Have to study cast lists of other films and discover his earlier work. Loved It's Complicated--Baldwin and Meryl Streep are so good together.

DIFFERENT HATS

Stick to one genre? It works well for others but it’s not for me. I love to travel and travel leads to non-fiction articles. The people I meet, an off-beat place or a different slant on a well-known tourist spot encourages me to write. A site—with a mystery that has never been solved, or an overheard conversation lends itself to fiction—if I don’t know how a story ends I have to invent one. History goes along with travel—time travel—back to the past. How did people live, would I have been the same person I am today if I lived then, what was it like in different lands, under different laws? How did people eat, cook, dress, rule and love? Dig into history and there’s another tale to be told. Mysteries, romances, science-fiction, literary, you name the category—narrative that doesn’t fit into a short story—pieces that fit together with the actions, speech and thoughts of characters that demand to be heard become a novel.
When it comes to writing I play the field. Please let me know your thoughts—do you wear different hats?

Bests,

Elise
